Here’s what you need to know about Talking Rock to fully enjoy your day spent here.

Location and History

Talking Rock is known for being the third smallest town in Georgia, and as you can imagine, visiting this Pickens County town is like stepping into the past.

The town of Talking Rock, Georgia, is conveniently located 35 minutes south of Blue Ridge, GA, and a little over an hour north of Atlanta. This makes it an easy destination for a day trip for hiking, picnics, or just relaxing next to the bubbling stream that winds through town.

Talking Rock was formed in the early 1800s when the railroad was extended and was incorporated as a town in 1883. The name comes from the Talking Rock Creek that flows through the area.

The Talking Rock Nature Preserve is situated just a few minutes north of the quaint town. So when you visit this nature preserve, be sure to stop in this charming town to visit, too. The 220-acre plot of land was acquired by the Southeastern Trust for Parks and Land in 2012, and the restoration and enhancement of the area began accelerating in 2019.

The trust was awarded grant funding to build four educational kiosks and two towers for chimney swifts, a type of native bird that prefers nesting in hollow towers like chimneys. The preserve puts a major emphasis on planting native trees and shrubs to help pollinators. The preserve is a beautiful place to spend a day in nature and support the preserve’s important natural enhancement projects.

Talking Rock Nature Preserve is located adjacent to Old Whitestone Road East and bisected by Carnes Mill Road.
