Attractions in North Georgia – A Must-See

05/14/2018 | by Kirsten Cooper | All Blog Posts Outdoor Activities Things to Do

Mountain views and local attractions in the North Georgia area are what bring tourists back every year and more and more are returning year-round.  The North Georgia Mountains are a popular destination with tourists not only for the beautiful scenery everywhere you look but also for their year-round festivals, hiking trails, mountain biking trails, lakes and more.  The landscaping and views of the mountains are enough to hypnotize you and make you forget all the other area attractions that also make The North Georgia Mountains a great place to visit.  If you are planning on visiting the North Georgia Mountains soon, take note of these area attractions you won’t want to miss out on.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

A great family adventure on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway starts at the historic depot, built in 1905, in downtown Blue Ridge, Georgia. Our regularly schedule trips are 26 miles roundtrip (4 hours) winding along the beautiful Toccoa River arriving in the quaint sister towns of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. You may ride in your choice of vintage, climate-controlled rail cars or open-air rail cars, we also offer a closed coach premiere car service for anyone over the age of 18yrs old,  Passengers have a 2 hour layover in McCaysville/Copperhill; plenty of time to eat lunch, shop for unique crafts and antiques, snack on ice cream, or walk across the old bridge in town to view the river.

Fall Branch Falls, near Ellijay

Fall Branch Falls is one of the prettiest waterfalls in North Georgia. The upper portion is a series of cascades that lead to a single major drop, approx. 30 feet, with water plunging into a deep pool at the base of the falls.  Accessibility to the Falls is about a quarter mile from the trailhead, making it a half-mile round trip.  The hike is mostly uphill, however, with its’ easy terrain this attraction is both kid and pet friendly. Here are some other North Georgia Waterfalls you may want to visit ….North Georgia Waterfalls You Can Visit

Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, near Blue Ridge

One of the most well-known attractions in North Georgia is the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge. Located about 48 minutes from Blue Ridge, this 270-foot-long suspension bridge is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi. You can access the bridge via a short (less than half a mile) hike along the Benton MacKaye Trail, which shares a trailhead with the Georgia section of the Appalachian trail at Springer Mountain.  My family and I visited the swinging bridge last July and it was beautiful.  I am not a fan of bridges, so for those of you who might be counting this out, don’t!  The views are spectacular and the hike there is easy.

Gold Mining in Dahlonega

Where was gold first discovered?  In Georgia, Dahlonega area to be specific.  In 1828, gold was discovered in Georgia some 20 years before the Rush to California.  The discovery of gold by a deer hunter, Benjamin Parks, was completely by accident.  He tripped over a rock and when he was looking at it realized it was full of gold.  Within a year’s time, approximately 15,000 miners heard about the discovery and rushed to find gold themselves.  Today, visitors can have the chance to strike it rich at the Consolidated Gold Mine.  The mine is the largest hard rock gold mine east of the Mississippi.  They offer indoor gold and gem mining.

There are many more great attractions in the North Georgia Mountains to see and experience.  You can go horseback riding, tubing, whitewater rafting, visit the local wineries and apple houses, hiking, fishing and my favorite….  antiquing.  Now what better way to experience all that North Georgia has to offer than to spend your down time in a beautiful cabin that has all the amenities of home.  Feel free to click our link and begin to explore all we have to offer blueskycabinrentals.com.

We stayed at the Creekside Reflections cabin in Elijah and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The river alongside the cabin was flowing really strong so we had the absolute pleasure of hearing the water flow from inside. Getting up early in the morning and sitting on the deck watching the water run by was an added pleasure. This was a surprise weekend for my husband but we both came away well rested. We will visit again. Only concern we had was a leaky faucet that eventually became a gushing flow requiring maintenance to be called out early Sunday morning. They came out really quick and resolved the issue. Overall experience was wonderful, thank you to everyone at Blue Sky Cabins.

Blue Sky and their staff were excellent. The cabin we rented is called Amazing Sunset. The view was unique and the sunsets beautiful. We experienced a few nights of a neighbors dog barking all through the night due to the owners leaving it out to wander while they were away. It was cold as well. I figured out that if I could get it to the back porch and close the door, the dog would remain quiet. Whoever attended the dog came every two days and never returned the poor thing to its screened in porch. Blue sky handled it best they could and were kind enough to refund me a night. The cabin is small and its layout not so great. The beds were hard and not comfortable except for the one downstairs. Overall not bad, the neighborhood is quiet. Would I rent it again? No

We stayed at Hide N Creek with our 2 dogs during Christmas and it was perfect! Nestled in a little valley right on the bend of a beautiful mountain brook, with plenty of land for the dogs to explore. Our dogs especially liked that it was flat and not on a busy road. The cozy cabin had a hot tub right outside the master suite and a really nice screened porch overlooking the brook. The gas fireplace kept the cabin so warm that we only had to turn on the furnace once. It had everything we needed and was super comfy. We took a few side trips to go hiking, went into Blue Ridge to eat, and just chilled out and watched movies at the cabin. It was pure bliss! We've been renting different cabins from Blue Sky for years and this was definitely one of our favorites!

My weekend at Anglers Roost on the River was fantastic!! Such a beautiful cabin with an amazing view. The cabin is very spacious (there were 15 of us) and homey. Furniture is beautiful and just adds to the experience of being in the mountains. Fully stocked kitchen came in handy for cooking meals. The hot tub was a great addition as well, definitely added to the enjoyment of our stay. I would absolutely stay at Anglers Roost on the River again!
