March is when Blue Ridge starts to wake up—but it doesn’t fully commit yet. As a local, I’ll tell you this is a true shoulder-season month: one day feels like early spring, the next still hints at winter in the mountains.

Daytime highs usually range from the upper 50s to the mid-60s, which is perfect for hiking, wandering downtown, or sitting on a cabin porch with coffee. Mornings and evenings, though, can dip into the upper 30s and 40s, especially if you’re staying up on a ridge. Layers aren’t optional here—they’re just how we live.

Rain is fairly common in March, but it’s usually light and short-lived. Locals don’t cancel plans for it; we just throw on a jacket and keep going. The upside? Those showers help kickstart the greenery, and by late March, you’ll see budding trees, early wildflowers, and fuller waterfalls.
